HATTIESBURG, Miss. -Â Southern Miss put the pedal to the metal in the first two sets of Friday's contest against Charlotte (11-9, 1-3 C-USA), but ran into some traffic early in the third set. The Golden Eagles (9-9, 3-2 C-USA) were able to regain control of the ship to knock off the 49ers in four sets (26-24, 25-21, 19-25, 25-19)Â inside Reed Green Coliseum.Â
The 49ers jumped out to a quick 7-3 lead, but the Golden Eagles were able to quickly erase the deficit. Once Southern Miss was able to tie the set at 9-9, it never relinquished the lead for the remainder of the set. A big part of the momentum swing came from the play of Catherine Repsher and Kylie Grandy, who recorded 14 and 20 kills on the night, respectively.Â
From there, the Golden Eagles cruised to a second-set win after holding the lead for the entirety of it. The 49ers crept within four late in that set, but a kill by Grandy denied any comeback attempt they were attempting to mount. As a team, Southern Miss capped their night with a .231 hitting percentage.Â
Charlotte was able to jump to another early lead in the fourth set and never really lost control. The Golden Eagles got within one, but the 49ers closed the set on an 8-2 run.Â
The Golden Eagles were able to regain control of the ship in the fourth set en route to a 25-19 win. The fourth set was highlighted by a 9-1 run by Southern Miss that started with a kill by Grandy.Â
Sarah Bell, once again, chipped away at the all-time career assists record at Southern Miss by putting 55 assists in the box score. The San Antonio, Texas native now sits with 4,658 assists, good for No. 2 in Southern Miss history. Defensively, Repsher finished her night with six blocks and Madison Lawler finished with 20 digs. Alexis Coombs and Chandler Marshall each reached double-digit kills by recording 11 and 12, respectively.Â
Thought's from Stephanie Radecki
"Overall, I think we did a really nice job. I felt like we ran some great things offensively when we were in system... If you're in system with the other team, then you're going to have an advantage and I felt that we did that.Â
"Cat's having a great year and she's done an amazing job for us. She's been very consistent, she's had a very high hitting percentage and we were able to move her around [tonight]. She saw success on the right side and in the middle tonight. Kylie is just a really consistent player for us, offensively and defensively. She had another great night and I thought Sarah did an amazing job distributing the ball. Her serving was a big key for us to finish that fourth set."
The Golden Eagles return to Reed Green Coliseum against Rice on Sunday at 1 p.m.
