FIU Drops Southern Miss in Five

Miami, Fla. -Â Â The Golden Eagles were cruising to what looked to be a three-set victory, but FIUÂ managed to force some pressure late in the match to escape with a five-set win (25-21, 29-27. 21-25, 23-25, 13-15).Â
FIU jumped to an early lead before the Golden Eagles bounced back to take a comfortable lead. Southern Miss led by as many as nine before securing a 25-21 win in the opening set. The second set went similarly, but FIU had a set point in hand twice. The Golden Eagles were able to hang on at both occasions and won 29-27 by snagging the last two points.Â
After going up 3-2 in the third set, Southern Miss never regained control. The Panthers were able to control the court to force a fourth set on the Golden Eagles. FIU stormed back from an early deficit to gain control midway through the set and never looked back. The Panthers forced a fifth set via a 25-23 score.Â
FIU and Southern Miss battled a closely contested fifth set, but the Panthers hung on to win 15-13. The loss drops Southern Miss to 11-12 and 4-5 in C-USA play.Â
Sarah Bell recorded 62 assists, which was the most since she had 60 helpers against Ole Miss earlier this season. She also added 23 digs and a block. Chandler Marshall added 22 kills and Kylie Grandy finished with 19. The Golden Eagles finished with 11 blocks and a .191 hitting percentage.Â
The Golden Eagles return to Reed Green Coliseum on Tuesday against Southeastern Louisiana.
