
Handful of Golden Eagles Advance to Day Two

OXFORD, Miss. – The Southern Miss women's tennis team opened up play at the ITA Regionals with mixed results on Friday. Of the Golden Eagles that traveled, just Katia de la Garza is left in the main draw of her singles bracket.

In doubles, Rikeetha Pereira and Ebru Zeynep Yazgan lost to a duo from Alabama. The duo of Monique Burton and de la Garza also lost, but to a squad from Ole Miss. Both of the Southern Miss teams will be in the consolation draw starting on Saturday morning.

Tjasa Jerse and Arina Amaning play their first doubles match in the second division on Saturday morning as well.

Tanit Lopez, Pereira, Amaning, Jerse and Yazgan all lost their first round matches in the singles main draw. However, Lopez and Amaning won their consolation matches to stay alive until the next round on Saturday. Â

In the other singles draw, de la Garza won her first two matches and Burton bowed out in her lone singles match of the tournament. De la Garza will battle Celia Montero Estevan of Troy in the quarterfinals on Saturday afternoon.
