Kirk McCarty named C-USA Baseball Scholar-Athlete

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Former Southern Miss standout left-handed pitcher Kirk McCarty picked up another honor for the 2017 season, this time being honored as Conference USA's top baseball scholar-athlete, as voted by the faculty athletics representatives of each member institution.
McCarty, an Oak Grove High School product, was a first-team All-Conference USA selection in 2017 and also earned CoSIDA second-team Academic All-America honors and was a league All-Academic team selection for the second consecutive season. He was drafted in the seventh round (222nd pick overall) by the Cleveland Indians.
McCarty posted a 10-2 record in 17 starts for the Golden Eagles with 103 strikeouts and only 22 walks in 99 2/3 innings of work with a 3.52 ERA. He registered a 22-4 career record and his win total ranks tied for fifth on the school career charts. In 33 starts over his last two seasons, the Golden Eagles posted a 29-4 record in games in which he started.
Southern Miss finished with a school-record 50 wins and hosted its first regional since 2003.
