
Softball Falls In Series Finale Against North Texas

DENTON, Texas - The Southern Miss softball team dropped a close series finale to North Texas on Sunday, 9-6.
Offensively the Golden Eagles had 11 hits on the day. The team was led by Chase Nelson who went 3-for-3 on the day including a double. Samantha Reynolds, Lauren Holifield, and Samantha Papp all registered multiple hits in the finale. Caitlyn Aldous and Arielle Pollock also recorded hits in the game.
In the circle, Samantha Robles got the start and pitched five complete innings allowing six runs on ten hits with four strikeouts. Kim Crowson came in relief, pitching 1/3 innings and was charged for the loss. Crowson allowed three runs on two hits prior to Jade Lewis moving into the circle. Lewis pitched 2/3 innings allowing no runs on no hits.
The Golden Eagles got on the board first in the first inning plating a single runner. North Texas answered right back to tie the game, 1-1 after one complete.
Again, Southern Miss cracked the board to get a second run in the top of the third inning but the Mean Green answered back with their own run. So after three complete the score was tied again, 2-2.
The top of the fifth inning, the Black and Gold came alive and brought home four runs on four hits. Reynolds drew a lead-off walk to get the inning started. Nelson singled through the left side to put two runners on and then Holifield singled to centerfield bringing Reynolds home. Samantha Papp put down a sac bunt to move the runners over before Aldous knocked a double to right center plating both Nelson and Holifield. Arielle Pollock then singled to right field bringing Aldous home but a quick out from North Texas ended the big inning for Southern Miss, leading 6-2.
The Mean Green rallied from behind in the bottom of the sixth inning plating six runs on five hits and securing the win for North Texas.
The Golden Eagles (20-21, 5-10) return to action on April 11 when they begin a five game home stand this week. Southern Miss takes on Jackson State on Tuesday with a 5 o'clock game time.
