
Southern Miss Softball Claims Season Series Over Jackson State

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss softball team improved to 21-21 overall with a win over Jackson State on Tuesday. The Golden Eagles recorded a 9-1 run-rule victory.
In the circle, Jillian Johnson earned her sixth victory of the season, tossing 3.0 innings of work against Jackson State. The junior allowed no runs on a single hit and two strikeouts. Johnson gave way to Peyton Carter in the top of the fourth inning. Carter allowed one run on one hit in 3.0 innings of work.
Offensively, the Golden Eagles notched a .370 team batting average, going 6-for-21 with two doubles, a triple, nine runs scored and four RBI. Arielle Pollock, Lauren Holifield and Tori Dew each finished the day with multiple hits. Dew and Heather Hill notched doubles, while Samantha Reynolds recorded the triple. Chase Nelson led the way with three runs scored.
Southern Miss jumped out to an early lead, plating six runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Golden Eagles opened the game with a Samantha Reynolds walk. Nelson reached on an error that brought Reynolds home and left her on third base. Holifield hit a single, Dew doubled down the left line and Bailey Stokes walked to load the bases with one out. Pollock knocked her single, bringing home Holifield. A wild pitch scores Dew and then some confusion at home plate allows Stokes to cross the plate. Heather Hill then steps up and hits a double down the left line and Pollock scores. The inning comes to an end but not before Southern Miss takes a significant lead, 6-0.
The two teams exchanged scoreless innings until Jackson State puts run up on the board in the top of the fourth. The Tigers put together two singles and a hit by pitch to plate their lone run of the night.
The Golden Eagles extended their lead with another run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Nelson reached on a Jackson State error and was brought home on a wild pitch. Southern Miss up 7-1 after four complete.
In the bottom of the sixth inning the Black and Gold put up two more runs earning the victory in run-rule fashion. Nelson was walked and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Holifield singled, Dew singled, and Tori Rouse singled all helping to plate Nelson. Amber Pack came in to pinch hit and ended up with the walk-off single to score Holifield and end the game. Final score, 9-1, Southern Miss.
