
Southern Miss Softball Wins Road Game Against Alabama State

MONTGOMERY, Ala. â€" The Southern Miss softball team captured the road win against the Lady Hornets of Alabama State in a 7-1 decision on Tuesday, March 14. They improve to 13-10 on the season, 7-3 on the road.
Offensively, the Golden Eagles scored seven runs on nine hits and four walks. Tori Dew and Jillian Johnson both had two hits on the night including a Dew double. Jade Lewis, Caitlyn Aldous, Heather Hill, Samantha Reynolds, and Chase Nelson all accounted for hits in the matchup. J. Johnson led the team with three RBI.
In the circle, the Golden Eagles used a trio of pitchers to secure the win. Samantha Robles earned her sixth start on the season against the Lady Hornets, allowing no runs on three hits in 3.0 innings. Danielle Block came in relief for Robles in the top of the fourth inning and allowed one run (unearned) on one hit in 1 1/3 innings of work. Jillian Johnson came in relief for Block in the bottom of the fifth inning and finished the game, allowing no runs on no hits. Block gets the win moving her to 1-0 on the season and Johnson gets the save, her second on the season.
Southern Miss scratched the scoreboard first in the top of the second inning when Aldous singled to third base and Hill with a SAC bunt advanced Aldous to second and then Nelson singled to left field bringing Aldous home. The Golden Eagles at the end of the second was leading 1-0.
The Golden Eagles looked to extend their lead when Dew doubled down the right foul line and then Hill singled to left field bringing Dew home for the second run of the game. Southern Miss up 2-0.
Alabama State tried to answer back in the bottom of the fifth inning with a single run headed by a double from the Lady Hornets. The run ultimately was unearned because ASU scored on a fielding error. They cut the lead, 2-1 going into the sixth.
The Black and Gold responded right away putting three more runs on their lead in the top of the sixth, securing the win. A walk, SAC bunt, J. Johnson single, and an error set the Golden Eagles up for success. Aldous scored on the Johnson single, Eva Scott (who was in to run for Hill) scored on the throwing error by the Hornets and Johnson was brought home on a wild pitch. ASU escaped the inning before Southern Miss could put any more runs up. Final score in Montgomery, 7-1.
