HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss Lady Eagles came out against the Lady Monarchs of Old Dominion with a vengeance, led by Senior Brittanny Dinkins' career high 32 points, for the team's third straight Conference USA win. The Lady Eagles defeated the Lady Monarchs by a mark of 84-69 and improve to 11-5.
"It says a lot about our team in how we were able to get that win," said head coach Joye Lee-McNelis. "This team has really hung their hat on our defense generating our offense. I think you all saw that tonight. We're playing better as a team, we're sharing the basketball, out of our transition game we're able to hit open people for shots and our chemistry is a whole lot better than it was before Christmas."
Southern Miss' hat hung on 18 total fast break points and getting 33 points off of ODU's 29 turnovers. The Lady Eagles also saw half of their points come from shots made in the paint.
Dinkins' notched her second career double-double and she scored eight of the Lady Eagles first 10 points. On the defensive side, she had to guard Jennie Simms, the nation's second leading scorer.
"I knew I had an assignment and for me my focus was to just get the job done," Dinkins said. "I just did what I had to do. I told coach when we first came back that I think we just missed Reed Green. I struggled in Las Vegas, offensively, and to get those two wins in Texas just had me feeling very, very good. To have our fans here I knew we had to put on a show."
Dinkins' 10 steals ties the program's single game steals record and this is the third wire-to-wire win for the Lady Eagles this season.
