HATTIESBURG, Miss. â€" The Southern Miss soccer team bounced back from its only loss of the season last Sunday to beat Lamar 3-0 at the Southern Miss Soccer Complex Friday night.
The Golden Eagles improve to 4-1-0 while the Cardinals fell to 1-6-0. With early offensive pressure, Stephanie Garcia got the Golden Eagles on the board in the 23rd minute off a pass from Katie Richmond. Along with her first goal of the season, Garcia recorded three shots on goal.
Nine minutes later, Beth Coleman scored her second goal of the season off a Garcia pass.
"I love getting the opportunity to get up and score, so it was awesome to get another goal," Coleman said.
The Southern Miss offense recorded 10 shots in the first half. Brittany Taylor made three key saves to record her third shutout of the season.
Bri Schubeck got the second half going twenty minutes later with her second goal of the season off a clever pass from Lyndsey Lee. Schubeck and Coleman are now tied for the leading scorers for the Golden Eagles.
Coach Mohammed El-Zare was proud of the way his team bounced back after a disappointing loss at home last week to Mississippi State.
"It's definitely a confidence builder for us to get this win especially against a very organized defense from Lamar," El-Zare said. "I'm happy we were able to create so many scoring opportunities and get three great goals on the board."
The Golden Eagles return to action on Sunday against Jackson State for its third of a five game homestand at 1 p.m.
