
Golden Eagles Tennis Concludes Day 1 of Round Robin

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Southern Miss women's tennis team participated in the first day of action Friday at the Samford Round Robin tournament.
The Golden Eagles played without their No. 1 doubles teams of Carolin Drescher and Alex Kitchen who were competing at the Riviera/ITA All-American tournament in Palisades, Calif., and were unable to capture a match.
Claudia Castella and Tzu-Hui Chen got doubles play started on Friday for the Golden Eagles but fell just short of winning their first duals match together after losing 7-5 to Wind and Cao from Memphis. Tjasa Jerse and Elena Roca also played their first doubles match together but couldn't fight back and lost 6-4.
Rikeetha Pereira and Gabrielle Robinson finished doubles play in Flight 3 and lost to the tournament's host team of Savannah Wood and Elsa Pool 6-2.
Both Roca and Jerse began singles play against women from Memphis but fell 6-1, 6-2 and 6-3, 6-2, respectively. Pereira and Castella battled against two women from UAB but couldn't find a way to win their matches. Pereira started strong with a 6-2 win but ultimately fell 6-1,6-0 in the last two sets.
Chen was able to help the Golden Eagles finish day one strong and win her match against Sofia Kurtz from Tulane 6-4,6-3.
The Golden Eagles continue their second day at the Round Robin tournament tomorrow at the Samford Tennis Complex.
