HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss soccer team tied Marshall 1-1 in Conference USA action Sunday at the Southern Miss Soccer Complex.
The Herd (2-5-3) got the scoring started early in the opening minute of the game when Jordan Sackaris scored her sixth goal of the season.
It took Katie Richmond only six minutes to equalize the game for her fourth goal of the season. Richmond and Bri Schubeck now are tied for the leading scorers on the team with four each.
The rest of the match was a back and forth game of scoring opportunities. The Golden Eagles outshot the Herd 21-17.
Lydnsey Lee, Karen Torres and Ola Akinniyi made big defensive plays to hold the Herd to only one goal and made key blocks on shots inside the box. Adrianna Garcia's shot off the crossbar late in the second half looked to be the best opportunity for the Golden Eagles to take the lead.
Later Garcia was found open down the left side of the field and made her way into the box with only the keeper to beat but hit the side netting for her fourth shot of the game. At the end of regulation time, the two teams were still tied at 1-1. The Golden Eagles went into double overtime for the first time this season but couldn't capitalize on its scoring chances.
Before Sunday's game, the team celebrated the 12th annual Blake Nettles Day and Karen Torres was honored with the first ever scholarship in his honor. The day was celebrated with the Southern Miss soccer team and family and friends of Nettles.
Southern Miss is now 5-3-1 on the season. The Golden Eagles return to action when they travel to Houston, Texas next Sunday for a 1 p.m. showdown against Rice.
