Golden Eagles Find Early Success In Houston

HOUSTON, Texas - After a great opening day at the Rice Invitational in Houston, Texas, the Southern Miss women's tennis team fell just short in its Sunday action.
Carolin Drescher advanced to the winners' bracket after her win on Friday to face Savannah Durkin from Rice but fell 6-0, 6-1. Drescher lost her second match Sunday to Maddie Pothoff from Alabama, 6-3, 6-2.
Drescher's doubles partner Alex Kitchen also moved on to the winners bracket after her bye in the first round but fell short to Smith Hinton (Alabama) 6-1, 6-2. Kitchen lost her second match of the day to Caroline Turner (Auburn) 6-1, 6-1.
Despite losing her first match on Sunday, Rikeetha Pereira finished strong with her win against Lina Halgreen from UTSA by 6-3, 7-6 (3).
Tjasa Jerse made it to the winners bracket in Flight 5B and was supposed to face teammate Elena Roca until she was substituted by Lopez from UTA. The match was never finished.
Gabrielle Robinson also made her way across the winners bracket facing Charoline Erlandsson (McNeese State) in the finals but fell short after a 7-7 (3), 6-1 decision.
The next action for the doubles pair Drescher and Kitchen will be at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships October 1st in Palisades, Calif. The rest of the Golden Eagles team will resume tournament play this Friday in Birmingham, Ala. at the Samford Invite.
