
Women's Tennis Opens Tournament Play in Houston

HOUSTON, Texas – The Southern Miss women's tennis team opened up its fall tournament play at the Rice Invitational at the George R. Brown Tennis Center Friday.
The Golden Eagles advance six out of eight players to the winners bracket in singles play. Seniors Carolin Drescher and Alex Kitchen advanced to the next round with Drescher winning 6-2, 5-7, 7-6 and Kitchen advancing off a bye. Drescher will play against Savannah Durkin from Rice and Kitchen will play Smith Hinton from Alabama.
Tjasa Jerse also moves on to the winners bracket after a 6-0, 6-0 win against Dian Friesdrichs from SHSU along with Elena Roca who won her match 6-3, 6-2 against Maria Maldonado from A&M Corpus. Claudia Castella and Gabrielle Robinson will advance with a 6-1, 6-4 and a 6-3, 6-2 win respectively over Texas State and SMU.
In doubles the Golden Eagles will advance one of the four teams to the winners bracket. Rikeetha Pereira and Elena Roca will advance to Saturday's match to face the duo from McNeese State after a 6-2 win over SMU.
Drescher and Kitchen lost their first doubles match of the season to Fioretti and Jurakova from McNeese State 6-2.
Matches will resume again tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. at the George R. Brown Tennis Center.
