BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -- The Southern Miss soccer team drops its second conference game in a row after a close 1-0 loss Thursday night at WKU.
The Lady Toppers (7-3-0) controlled early possession keeping the ball in the Golden Eagles' territory in the first half. Chandler Backes scored her ninth goal of the season off a header from Iris Dunn's cross in the 25th minute.
After conceding the goal, the Golden Eagles continued to put pressure on the Lady Toppers defense but couldn't find the back of the net after only taking three shots in the first half. Bri Schubeck recorded the first shot on goal in the second half.
Continuous runs down the sideline and pressure from Becky McMullan and Katie Richmond kept the Lady Toppers pinned back in the second half. Breann Hedin continued to make her presence known by making strong defensive plays to keep the game close between the two sides.
Hedin's shot off the free kick was nailed on the top of the crossbar for the Golden Eagles' closest chance to equalize the game. Schubeck and Hedin continued to put pressure on Allison Leone in goal late in the game after dropped saves but couldn't convert a shot.
The Golden Eagles fall to 5-3-0 on the season and 0-2-0 in conference play. The Golden Eagles return home Sunday and host Marshall who are coming off a 3-1 loss to North Texas.
