HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss women's soccer team opens Conference USA play Sunday when they entertain Louisiana Tech. Match time is 1 p.m., at the Southern Miss Soccer Complex.
The Golden Eagles come off an 8-0 victory Thursday against Southern to improve to 5-1-0. Katie Richmond started the scoring for the Golden Eagles as she recorded her second goal of the season in the fourth minute and Southern Miss rolled from there over the visiting Jaguars. Becky McMullan also recorded her second goal of the season before assisting Richmond for her second goal of the game two minutes later.
Bri Schubeck, who now leads the team with four goals, recorded two goals before the half was over. Somer Jones and Allie Baumhower added to the scoring frenzy. The Golden Eagles offense controlled possession and was able to get the bench players plenty of minutes on the field before conference play.
Monica Maldonado got her name on the board in the 89th minute for her first goal as a Golden Eagle. The team converted eight of its 22 shots. The 22 shots ties the 2014 team with the fourth most in a game in Southern Miss soccer history.
The Lady Techsters travel to Hattiesburg after its 4-0 win against Southern earlier in the week. Mylene Roy-Ouellet leads the team with six goals this season. LA Tech enters Sunday's game on a six-game win streak and leads the conference with the best record.
