HATTIESBURG, Miss. â€" The Southern Miss women's soccer made a statement Thursday night with an 8-0 win against Southern at the USM Soccer Complex.
The 5-1-0 Golden Eagles got the goals started early in the 4th minute when Becky McMullan set up Katie Richmond inside the 6-yard box for her second goal of the season. Richmond returned the favor to McMullan 12 minutes later setting her up with a one-on-one with the keeper to also score her second goal of the season.
"My offensive side of the game has definitely improved since last season and it feels good to be able to get forward and get other girls on the scoreboard," McMullan said.
Freshman, Monica Maldonado, played early quality minutes and earned her first assist of the season when she set Richmond up for her second goal of the game. Bri Schubeck racked up two goals before halftime, while Lyndsey Lee and Maldonado picked up their second assists of the season.
Goalkeepers Kelly Brambhatt and Shelby Presnell also saw quality minutes in the game giving Brittany Taylor rest. All three keepers only needed to make one save each with their time in goal.
Allie Baumhower picked up where the Golden Eagles left off in the first half and scored her first goal of the season 11 minutes into the second half. McMullan continued her offensive presence and put pressure on the Jaguars defense. McMullan set up Somer Jones with a tricky pass into the box to make it a 7-0 lead for the Golden Eagles.
Maldonado wasn't done with just her two assists. Andrea Rivera was able to thread a ball through the defense to Maldonado for her first goal as a Golden Eagle in the 89th minute.
The offensive pressure and accuracy proved to be too much for the Jaguars. Coach Mohammed El-Zare was pleased with the offense and the team's ability to share the ball and hold possession.
"This was a great win and we are improving every day," El-Zare said. "I'm really happy about how the players off the bench contributed and I was excited to see the goals they were able to create."
The Golden Eagles improve to 5-1 and open up conference play to LA Tech (8-1-0) on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Southern Miss Soccer Complex.
