HATTIESBURG, Miss. â€" The Southern Miss men's golf team fired a one-under 283 over the final 18 holes Tuesday to finish second of 15 teams in the 15th annual Sam Hall Intercollegiate at the Hattiesburg Country Club.
The Golden Eagles opened their 2016-17 golf season with a 54-hole team score of 848, falling to ULM in the team standings by only four strokes (848) on the par 71, 6,092-yard course.
"You have to realize we beat 13 teams with only one team beating us and you have to build on that," said Southern Miss coach Jerry Weeks. "We had our chances (in the final round). After hitting a lull in the middle part of the round, we did finish strong and we look forward to returning to action next week."

Sophomore Derick Kelting (Amarillo, Texas) added a 73 to end his tournament with a 214 and a 17th-place tie, while senior Ryan Argotsinger (Kansas City, Mo.) added a 76 for a 217 and a tie for 35th.

Codd ended with a 221 total score, which placed him in a 59th-place tie.
Zander Lozano of UTSA and Billy Tom Sargent each tallied 208 scores to win co-medalist individual honors.
