HATTIESBURG, Miss. - A five-game road swing comes to a close for the Southern Miss baseball team when they travel to New Orleans to face Tulane in a 6:30 p.m., contest, Tuesday, at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
The Golden Eagles, ranked No. 19 in the latest Collegiate Baseball poll which was released on Monday, looks to split the season series with Tulane after dropping a 12-7 decision to the Green Wave at MGM Park in Biloxi last month.
The program enters the game with a 27-10 record after dropping two of three games at UAB over the weekend. Southern Miss, though, tallied an 11-0, seven-inning victory over the Blazers in Sunday's series finale and belted a grand slam by senior Michael Gilbert and a three-run homer by Chase Scott.
Despite the losses over the weekend, the Golden Eagles continue to swing a hot bat with a team batting average of .319.
Graduate transfer and centerfielder Jake Sandlin leads the way for the club with a .386 average, while senior shortstop Nick Dawson holds a .382 mark and senior first baseman Tim Lynch is at .381 with a team-best 42 runs batted in.
Junior Tracy Hadley holds a .367 batting average, while junior rightfielder Dylan Burdeaux possesses a .344 percentage and redshirt freshman Hunter Slater comes in at .329.
Southern Miss faces a Tulane team that dropped two of three games over the weekend to Cincinnati to fall to 22-13 on the campaign.
Southern Miss expects to throw freshman left-hander Stevie Powers (0-0, 1.93 ERA) against the Green Wave, while Tulane expects to counter with redshirt sophomore J.P. France (2-1, 4.67 ERA) who got the victory over the Golden Eagles last month.
Following the Tulane contest, Scott Berry's club returns home to face Rice in a pivotal Conference USA series. The set opens Friday at 7 p.m., in a televised contest on Fox Sports 2, while the two teams return to action Saturday in a 4 p.m., start before ending the series Sunday at 1 p.m.
