HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss women's tennis team swept Jackson State in tennis action Friday at the USM Tennis Courts.
The Golden Eagles improved to 8-1 overall.
"I think our attitude, the way we fought during the match from 1 to 6, and I definitely think in the doubles that we played solid and competed better than the other team," Head Coach Dominic Modise said. "Every win and every match that we play means a lot to the program. We have to give this young team confidence and to show that the Golden Eagles can continue to get better. We are showing that the Southern Miss Women's Tennis program can continue to get better."
The Golden Eagles opened play claiming the doubles point with victories at No. 1 and No. 3. Carolin Drescher and Alex Kitchen blanked Julie Angermann and Anastasia Zviahintse 6-0 before Elena Roca and Tjasa Jerse clinched the point with a 6-1 win over Bright Phakamad and Karina Ono.
Southern Miss won all six singles. Drescher clinched the match with a 7-5, 6-0 win over Zviahintse at No. 1.
"This team has embraced being ranked and are very excited and believe that all the hard work that they have put in has paid off," said Modise. "The team also understands that this is not over and that we still have a lot of matches to play. There are a lot of tough matches that remain and we have to perform every day."
