
Men's Golf Ends Mobile Tournament in 10th Place

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Freshman Willie Hammond (Southlake, Texas) and junior Ryan Argotsinger (Kansas City, Mo.) each shot a two-under par 70 to help Southern Miss clinch 10th place at the Mobile Sports Authority Collegiate Tuesday in Mobile, Ala.
The Golden Eagles shot a team score of 289, its third lowest team round of the season, to enjoy tying for its highest team finish of the year.
Hammond collected the lowest finish for the Golden Eagles, placing tied for 25th with a 217 stroke total. Argotsinger ended his tournament with a 219 and a 34th-place tie.
Senior Hayes Weathersby (Poplarville, Miss.) shot his tournament-low round of 74 to complete his event at 224, while freshman Nick Cortez (Hoover, Ala.) also tallied that tourney stroke total -- firing a 75 over his final 18 holes -- as both players ended tied for 54th.
Golden Eagle redshirt freshman Nathan Corchis (Water Sound, Fla.) shot a 75 over his final circuit for a 226 total and a 62nd-place finish.
Nationally ranked Auburn recorded a 278 team score to end the event with a 26-under par 838, beating Chattanooga (852) by 14 strokes.
Wake Forest, another nationally ranked team, placed third at 856, followed by Kansas State (858), Georgia State (859), host South Alabama (866), Ole Miss (867), Mississippi State (868), Eastern Michigan (874) and Southern Miss (879).
The Golden Eagles came in one stroke ahead of 11th-place Texas State (880), Louisiana-Lafayette (882), Illinois State (883), Middle Tennessee (886) and Mercer (887).
Michael Johnson won the individual title by shooting a final-round 68 for a 14-under 202, beating Peter Staalbo of South Alabama by seven strokes.
Southern Miss returns to action Feb. 29-March 1 at the Louisiana Classic in Lafayette, La., at Oakbourne Country Club.
