
Men's Golf Opens Mobile Tournament in 10th-Place Tie

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss men's golf team rode its third-lowest team round of the season into a 10th-place tie after the opening day of the 16-team Mobile Sports Authority Intercollegiate in Mobile, Ala., Monday.
The Golden Eagles, playing at the par-72, 7,160-yard Magnolia Grove Crossing Golf Course, shot a 290 in the opening round, before finishing the day with a second-round score of 300. Southern Miss finished the day at 590 for the 36 holes, tying them with Middle Tennessee.
Individually, freshman Willie Hammond (Southlake, Texas) registered the team's low round of the day with a 70 over his first 18 holes, before tallying a 77 on the final circuit for the Southern Miss' lowest stroke total of 147 and a 32nd place tie.
Junior Ryan Argotsinger (Kansas City, Mo.) collected a one-under 71 in the opening round, his sixth par or below round this season, before firing a 78 to end his day with a 149 and in a 46th-place tie. Fellow Golden Eagle, freshman Nick Cortez (Hoover, Ala.), ranks tied with Argotsinger after compiling rounds of 74 and 75.
Senior Hayes Weathersby (Poplarville, Miss.) fired a pair of 75s for a 150 stroke total and 52nd place tie, while redshirt freshman Nathan Corchis (Water Sound, Fla.) ended one stroke back of Weathersby at 151 (78-73) to hold a tie for 60th-place.
Nationally ranked Auburn shot a 36-hole score of 16-under, 560, leading Chattanooga (568) by eight strokes. Georgia State scored a 574, followed by nationally ranked Wake Forest (575), Kansas State (577), Ole Miss (578), host South Alabama (579), Mississippi State (581), Eastern Michigan (586) and then Southern Miss and Middle Tennessee.
Louisiana-Lafayette finds themselves back one stroke behind the Golden Eagles and Blue Raiders at 591 in 12th, besting Texas State (592), Mercer (595) and Illinois State (598).
Michael Johnson of Auburn shot a pair of 68s for a 10-under 134 to hold a four-stroke advantage in the individual race.
