
Women's Tennis Team Gets Past Louisiana-Lafayette

LAFAYETTE, La. -- The Southern Miss women's tennis team bounced back to win four of the singles in defeating Louisiana 4-1 Saturday morning at the Cajun Courts in remaining undefeated at 7-0.
"I am proud of the way our team continuingly come out and compete each day," Head Coach Dominic Modise said. "We were more focused in our singles' matches. They just battled. We just continue to improve with each match."
Louisiana's Juliette Clement and Elena Sava got past Elena Roca and Tjasa Jerse with a 6-2 win at No. 3. Claudia Castella and Rikeetha Pereira evened the doubles with a 6-3 against Alexandra Way and Abby Johnson. However, the Rajun Cajuns' clinched the point as Melissa Burckhartt and Kelly Drew battled Carolin Drescher and Alex Kitchen to a 7-5 win at No. 1.
The Golden Eagles tied the score when Carolin Drescher cruised to a 6-1, 6-3 win over Kelly Drew at No. 1. Jerse gave the Eagles the lead when she won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 4 over Dana Brankovic. Rikeetha Pereira won 6-3, 6-0 at No. 3 over Melissa Burckhartt. Elena Roca then clinched the match for the Golden Eagles with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Alexandra Way at No. 6.
Alex Kitchen split sets with Elena Sava, but was leading 3-1 in the third before that match was halted. Claudia Castella dropped her first set in a tie-breaker 7-6 (6) to Abby Johnson before the match was called.
Southern Miss will travel to No. 25 Mississippi State on Feb. 27 at 2 p.m.
