
Golden Eagles Soar Past Jackson State in 3-1 Win

HATTIESBURG, Miss. â€" Southern Miss soccer jumped out to a early two goal lead to defeat Jackson State in a comfortable 3-1 win, Sunday, at the Southern Miss Soccer Complex.
The original matchup between the two teams was set in September but was postponed and rescheduled due to inclement weather.
The Golden Eagles got the offense rolling early with three shots on goal in the first 10 minutes of play. Ashton Stennis scored her first goal of the season in the 14th minute off a pass from Ola Akinniyi.
Monica Maldonado added to the Golden Eagle scoring in the 30th minute when Somer Jones' shot was saved but dropped in front of Maldonado's feet. Maldonado had the easy tap in for her second goal of the season, which put the Golden Eagles up 2-0.
JSU scored six minutes later when Leah Pritchard found the back of the net to bring her team back within one.
Hannah Abrams and Becky McMullan put pressure on the Lady Tigers defense throughout the entire first half. The Golden Eagles out shot JSU 15-3 in the first 45 minutes.
McMullan came out from halftime using her speed to create scoring opportunities for the Golden Eagles and was able to beat the defender on the right side of the field, attack inside the box and score across Rachyl Robles in goal. The goal in the 51st minute was McMullan's third goal of the season.
Adriana Garcia and Lydnsey Lee tested Robles in goal but couldn't add to the lead for the Golden Eagles. The team finished with 20 shots.
Shelby Presnell saw playing time in the end of the second half and came up big in the 83rd minute to keep the score at 3-1.
The Golden Eagles return to Conference USA action, Thursday when they travel to Norfolk, Virginia to face Old Dominion at 6 p.m. CT.
