CHARLOTTE, N.C. â€" The first penalty kick awarded against the Southern Miss soccer team was the deciding goal in the Golden Eagles 1-0 loss to Charlotte on Sunday.
Brittany Taylor recorded eight saves in the game before the penalty kick was awarded to the 49ers in the 73rd minute. Martha Cha Thomas went the opposite direction of Taylor and shot the winning goal of the game.
Breann Hedin and Ola Akinniyi both had solid performances on defense making it hard for the 49ers offense to get easy shots on Taylor. Both defenders made key plays in order to keep the game close.
Adriana Garcia and Karen Torres lead the Golden Eagles with two shots each but were unable to equalize the game.
The team returns home for more Conference USA action on Friday, Oct. 21st to face UAB at 3 p.m. at the Southern Miss Soccer Complex.
