HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Coming off a solid 1-0-1 weekend, the Southern Miss women's soccer team continues its road swing with a game at Alabama on Sunday. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
The Golden Eagles, now 2-1-3, have been strong both offensively and defensively this season. The team has shown their determination (and fitness) by playing in double overtime in four out of six games, finishing an impressive 1-0-3.
Through possession and a high intensity offense, Southern Miss has also proven that they are a difficult team to defend against. The Golden Eagles lead their opponents in shots, 102-50, with 17 different players earning shots on goal.
Eight players, including five freshmen, have scored goals for the Golden Eagles. Somer Jones and Aisa Ribbens lead the team with two goals apiece. Breann Hedin and Kay Kay Hypolite currently lead the team in assists with two each.
On the other end of the pitch, the Golden Eagle defense has also been remarkable.
With 19 saves and 527 minutes so far this season, junior goalkeeper Brittany Taylor is moving up in the Southern Miss record books. Taylor now ranks third in career saves (212) and is second in career goals against average.
Taylor and freshman Brittany Snyder, who has recorded 90 minutes in goal thus far, have helped the Southern Miss backline earn two shutouts in the team's last two games. Led by defenders Hypolite, Ola Akinniyi, Ashton Stennis and Adriana Garcia, the Golden Eagles have now gone 253 straight minutes without giving up a goal.
Alabama leads the series against Southern Miss 3-1-0. The two teams last met in 2007, when the Crimson Tide beat the Golden Eagles 3-0 in Tuscaloosa.
Scouting the Opposition:
Alabama: The Crimson Tide (1-3-2) just finished up a three game road swing, losing 2-1 at Tennessee Tech, tying 0-0 at Harvard, and losing 1-0 at Rhode Island. Senior goalkeeper Emily Rusk has not allowed a goal at home since October 5, 2014. Alabama will begin the weekend playing LSU (4-2-0) at home on Friday, Sept. 11.
