HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss women's golf program has had some outstanding performances from its members this summer.
A pair of Golden Eagle golfers enjoyed a stellar showing at the 82nd Mississippi Women's Golf Association State Amateur Championship that was played earlier this month at The Oak Golf Club in Pass Christian.
Rising junior Emily Ross from Diamondhead, Miss., finished the event runner-up in the Championship Flight of the match play event in the 72-person field, while rising senior Mackenzie Kelly of Magee, Miss., was a championship medalist and made it to the Final 4 of the event.
"I couldn't be more proud of Emily and Mackenzie for their play at the Mississippi State Amateur," said Southern Miss first-year women's golf coach Erika Brennan. "Emily has been focused on her strength and conditioning this summer, and she is already seeing the results of her hard work. To finish as the runner-up in the Championship match is such a huge accomplishment and I know it will bolster her confidence as we approach our fall season.
"Mackenzie is so athletic and capable, and I am equally thrilled that she made the Final 4 at the state amateur. What's most exciting to me, is that I know that these girls still have their best golf ahead of them. They represent our program with class and are amazing young ladies. Our future is bright!"
One incoming player this fall, Valentina Haupt (Weston, Fla.), played for the country of Chile in last week's Pan American Games competition at Glen Golf Club in Markham, Ontario.
Haupt finished 24th in the event in the 72-hole, four-day event, posting a 325 total score, including a best round of 79 during the third day of competition.
