Baseball to Offer Summer Camps

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss baseball program will hold five different types of camps this summer at Pete Taylor Park, including a one-week sessions for kids, a summer showcase, and a pair of specialized sessions including one for pitching/catching and one for hitting/defense. The following is information on each of these camps of which all will take place at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field:
Summer Kid's Camps
The last week-long session this summer camp for kids in grades 1-7 is slated to take place July 13-16. Campers will be divided into groups by age to ensure quality and safety. These camps will cover fundamentals such as hitting, base running, defensive techniques, primary and secondary positions. The camp will be limited to the first 100 applicants. Each camper will receive a USM Camp T-shirt and insurance. Cost for each four-day camp is $165. Times for each day will begin with sign-in taking place from 8:15-9 a.m., with the conclusion of each day at 12 noon.
Summer Showcase Camp
This camp is designed to allow current high school freshman through junior college sophomore (junior college freshman must be academic qualifier) baseball players the chance learn the skills needed to compete at the next level while receiving instruction from current Southern Miss coaches, various junior college coaches and other four-year Institutions. The camp is set to take place July 18 and registration begins at 11 a.m. The camp starts at 12:00 noon and end when all camp participants have completed the session. The itinerary will include instruction specific to their defensive position, improving 60-yard dash times, and hitting. Pitchers will be allowed to participate at both positions. Cost is $155 and includes insurance, instruction and a camp T-shirt.
Pitching/Catching Camp
This one-day Pitching and Catching Camp is scheduled for June 27. This camp is designed to offer instruction and tips for improvement to attendees with focus specifically on pitching and catching. All campers will receive lunch and a camp T-shirt. Pitchers will be instructed on velocity training, arm care, front side direction, acceleration, tempo control, command philosophy, mental approach, and other aspects of the USM pitching approach. Catchers will receive instruction on receiving, blocking, throwing mechanics, plays at the plate, bunts, pop-ups, game management, arm care, and catching drills practiced by Southern Miss players. The cost is $100. All campers will receive Lunch and a camp T-shirt. The camp begins at 9 a.m., and ends at 3 p.m. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m., at Pete Taylor Park.
Hitting/Defense Camp
This one-day Hitting and Defense Camp is scheduled for June 28. The camp is designed to instruct proper techniques used by Southern Miss hitters, infielders and outfielders. The day will be divided up with defense in the morning and hitting in the afternoon. All Campers will receive lunch and a camp T-shirt. Hitters will receive instruction and be provided with drills that emphasize pre-pitch mentality, proper load and timing mechanics, tee work, soft toss, front toss, extension with finish, body and physical training care, and other aspects used by USM players and coaches. The defense portion of the camp will include infield and outfield techniques and drills. Infielders and outfielders will learn all aspects from pre-pitch routines to finishing throwing motions on all plays. This includes ground balls and fly balls, as well as throwing mechanics, and arm care. Campers are allowed to participate in both days. The cost is $100. All Campers will receive lunch and a camp T-shirt. The camp will begin at 9 a.m., and end at 3 p.m. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m., at Pete Taylor Park. The cost is $100. If you register for both sessions, June 27 and June 28, the cost for both combined is $175.
