HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss baseball team continues its final homestand of the regular season this weekend when they entertain Conference USA foe Marshall in a three-game series at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
The Golden Eagles (25-16-1 overall, 10-10 C-USA) enter the set having won its last three-straight contests and will play the Thundering Herd in a single game at 6 p.m., Friday, in a contest on Saturday at 2 p.m., and the conclude the series, Sunday, with an 11 a.m., tilt.
Southern Miss will look to get a little bit of rest before this weekend's action after playing the school's longest-ever baseball game Wednesday night in a 7-6, 17-inning affair that took almost five hours to complete.
Junior leftfielder Chase Scott increased his team season-best hitting streak to 11 games in that contest, ending the night with a pair of hits. He has is hitting .356 (16x45) with nine runs, three homers and 12 RBI over that stretch.
The Golden Eagles have also used the long ball as of late as part of their offensive arsenal, including two against the Jaguars during the midweek. The club has pounded 16 home runs over the last seven games and have collected multiple round-trippers in each of the last five contests. Tim Lynch leads the way for the program with eight home runs, having hit three last weekend at UTSA.
Lynch, who was named a Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week on Monday for his efforts against ULM and UTSA last week, currently holds a .314 batting average with seven doubles, eight homers and 23 RBI.
Freshman third baseman Taylor Braley continues to lead the offensive attack with a .344 batting mark with a team-high 10 doubles, three homers and 22 RBI, while senior designated hitter Matt Durst holds a .313 hitting average with nine doubles, two triples, three homers and a team-high 24 RBI.
In the two other phases of the game, the Golden Eagles are again tops in the league heading into the weekend in earned run average for pitching, posting a 3.20, while the team's fielding percentage and double plays turned also ranks first in C-USA at .974 and 48, respectively.
Following the Marshall series, the Golden Eagles will not return to action until the following Friday when they play host to league foe Charlotte next Friday.
