Eagles Fall in Series Opener at UTSA 7-2

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - UTSA scored four times in the second inning en route to defeating Southern Miss 7-2 here Friday night in the opening game of a Conference USA series at Roadrunner Field.
The Golden Eagles fell to 22-15-1 as the two teams will try to now complete the set with a 3 p.m., doubleheader on Saturday due to expected rainy weather expected here on Sunday.
UTSA collected 12 hits in the contest including three from Jesse Baker, and two each from C.J. Pickering, Ben Brookover and J.T. Gilmore, while Tim Lynch collected two of the Golden Eagles' seven.
Gilmore got the Roadrunners (25-17, 11-8) on the board with a two-run single, before Baker delivered a run-scoring single of his own and John Bormann finished the scoring the in the second with sacrifice fly.
Ben Brookover increased the lead to 5-0 in the third by driving in a run with a single.
The Golden Eagles cut into the gap with a solo home run from Lynch in the fourth, his team-leading sixth of the year, before the Roadrunners hit a solo blast of their own in the bottom of the frame by Baker, his 12th of the year.
Southern Miss then completed its scoring in the fifth with Austin Roussel's second homer of the year, but Bormann added an RBI single in the sixth to complete the scoring in the game.
Nick Johnson pitched a solid 4 2/3 innings in relief of Kirk McCarty, as he allowed a run on four hits with two walks and four strikeouts in his career-long outing. McCarty suffered his first loss of the year by allowing six runs on eight hits and two walks with one walk to fall to 3-1.
Brock Hartson threw eight strong frames to get the victory for UTSA and improve to 3-3 on the year. He limited Southern Miss to two runs on six hits and a pair of walks with seven strikeouts in the contest.
