HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss baseball team concludes a seven-game road swing, Tuesday, when they travel to face non-conference opponent South Alabama at Eddie Stanky Field. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m.
The Golden Eagles (5-4-1) look to extend their two-game win streak that came thanks to some solid pitching and timely hitting by the squad. Right-hander Cody Carroll allowed just one hit over eight innings in the Saturday game at Troy, while current Conference USA Pitcher of the Week James McMahon tossed a six-hit, complete-game shutout in the series finale. As for hitting, the Golden Eagles collected four home runs and a total seven extra-base hits in the series as they outscored the Trojans 13-8 in the three games.
Southern Miss now try to extend its winning streak over South Alabama (9-3) to a pair of games, after snapping a five-game losing streak to the Jaguars last April in Mobile. The Golden Eagles won that contest 3-1.
Freshman left-hander Kirk McCarty (Hattiesburg, Miss.) gets this second of the year against the Jaguars and will work to improve on his 4 1/3 season debut two Wednesdays ago against New Orleans. McCarty did not record a decision in his first outing and has posted a 6.23 earned run average. McCarty will face junior right-hander Austin Bembnowski, who has collected a 1-0 record with a 2.13 ERA.
Offensively the Golden Eagles collected four home runs over the weekend to give them seven as a team this season. Senior Connor Barron (Hattiesburg, Miss.) and junior Tim Lynch (Jupiter, Fla.) each had two for Southern Miss as they both continue to post solid numbers at the plate.
Barron has started in all 10 games and holds a .350 batting average. The centerfielder has reached base in all 10 games this season for Southern Miss and has a double, three home runs and seven RBI. He also has scored 10 times in the leadoff spot.
Lynch boasts a .367 batting mark with three doubles, three homers and a team-best eight RBI in nine games.
Prior to the game in Mobile, the Mobile Bay Chapter of the Southern Miss Alumni Association and the Eagle Club will be holding a pregame social from 4:30-6 p.m., at Momma Goldberg's (5602 Old Shell Road). The social is free to attend, and food and drinks will be available for purchase. A sandwich, your choice of nachos or chips, drink, and dessert will be $10 with cash or check made payable to USM-Mobile.
Following the Tuesday night contest, the Golden Eagles return home to Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field for the first of a nine-game homestand when they entertain Ole Miss in the program's annual BLACKOUT contest.
