HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss baseball team, fresh off winning its C-USA season-opening series with FIU last weekend, plays the first of an eight-game road swing Tuesday night at New Orleans. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m., at Maestri Field.
The Golden Eagles (11-7-1) have enjoyed a solid month of March, going 7-3 over this period, putting together a .265 team batting average to go along with 17 doubles, four triples, four home runs and 65 runs batted in. The pitching staff also has posted solid numbers, collecting a 1.84 earned run average and starting pitchers have combined for seven quality starts (six or more innings pitched and three or less earned runs).
Southern Miss will have to continue this solid play as they finish March playing on the road, starting with a team that they dropped a contest to at home last month. Southern Miss fell 7-6 decision to the Privateers on Feb. 18 at Pete Taylor Park, snapping a 12-game winning streak over UNO (8-11).
Four Golden Eagles are currently hitting over .300, including team leader Matt Durst, who has posted a .358 batting mark with a homer and a team-high 12 RBI. Connor Barron, who hit .643 in four games last week, is next at .356, to go along with three homers and nine RBI, followed by freshmen Taylor Braley (.333) and Daniel Keating (.318).
As for defense, the pitching staff continues to lead C-USA in team earned run average with a 2.24 mark on the season and the Golden Eagles rank third in the league in fielding average at .968. With its six double plays in the FIU series, the Southern Miss now has 22 on the year, which also ranks first in the league.
Following the UNO contest, Southern Miss travels to Ruston this weekend for a three-game C-USA set. Game times are 6 p.m., on Friday, 3 p.m., on Saturday and at 1 p.m., on Sunday.
