HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss baseball team opens the Conference USA portion of its schedule when it entertains FIU this weekend at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
The two teams will play a single contest on Friday at 6 p.m., at 2 p.m., on Saturday and then at 12 noon on Sunday to complete the three-game set.
FIU is no stranger to Pete Taylor Park, having played here in last season's C-USA Baseball Championship, but this will be the first time the two teams have met on the diamond since the Panthers joined the league last spring.
The Golden Eagles (9-6-1) look to extend their two-game winning streak as the team has won five of seven games since March 1.
Despite having an eight-game hitting streak snapped on Wednesday, senior Matt Durst continues to lead the Golden Eagles in hitting with a .375 batting average to go along with four doubles, a home run and 10 RBI. Junior Tim Lynch is next at .333 with four doubles, along with team best for homers (four) and RBI (11).
Southern Miss also brings in a Conference USA-best 2.51 team earned run average as the squad has outscored its opponents 81-50 this season. In addition, the team has made just five errors over the last nine games after committing 12 in the first seven games.
FIU enters the weekend with an 8-9 record.
Following the FIU series, the Golden Eagles head back on the road for the first of eight consecutive games away from home when they take on New Orleans Tuesday at Maestri Field. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m.
