
Men's Tennis Team Claims 5-2 Win over Lamar

BEAUMONT, Texas - The Southern Miss men's tennis team upped its record to 6-3 after a 5-2 victory over Lamar Friday at the Thomas Family Tennis Center.
"This was a good team win," head coach Zubin Engineer said. "Everyone came together and contributed in doubles and singles. The shot selection, competitive spirit and effort was very good. "
The Golden Eagles took the early lead 1-0 after winning two of the three doubles. Daniel Merker and Mikhail Esipov battled at No. 3 in earning a 6-2 win over Juuso Laitinen and Benny Schweizer (Lamar). Alex Doleac and Brad Marriott clinched the point with a 6-3 win against Jeandre Hoogenboezem and Mikko Rajamaki (Lamar) at No. 2. Chao-Yu Huang and Wen-Po Tseng lost to Michael Feucht and Nikita Lis (Lamar) 6-2 on court 1.
The Golden Eagles carried the momentum into singles play, capturing four of the six singles. Esipov defeated Juuso Laitinen at No. 5 with a 6-3, 7-5 decision. Tseng battled Feucht at No. 2 before pulling out a 7-6 (8), 7-5 win. Huang downed Hoogenboezem at No. 3 with a 7-5, 7-5 victory. Rakshit Rishi founded out the final point for the Golden Eagles with a 7-6 (4), 6-1 win over Steven McMullan on court 6.
The Cardinals posted a win at No. 1 when Lis defeated Tarun Surat 5-7, 6-4, 10-6. Doleac fell to Schweizer at No. 4 6-3, 6-7 (3), 10-7.
Southern Miss returns to action when the Golden Eagles play Texas Pan American on Saturday at 2 p.m.
