HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss baseball team looks to continue its winning ways when it plays host to the University of New Orleans in a 4 p.m., contest here Wednesday at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
The game time has been moved up two hours from its originally scheduled first pitch to beat expected cold weather later in the evening.
After sweeping Murray State last weekend, the Golden Eagles look to open the season 4-0 for the first time since capturing the first five games of the 2011 campaign.
A solid performance in all three phases of the game last weekend has helped propel the Golden Eagle to their 3-0 start, after collecting 37 hits and 23 runs, allowing just a 3.00 earned run average and fanning 27 while walking just nine on the mound and committing only four errors in the field.
Kirk McCarty (Hattiesburg, Miss./Oak Grove HS) makes his pitching debut for the Golden Eagles and becomes the first Golden Eagle freshman to make his initial appearance as a starter on the hill since Jake Winston did it in 2013 against Alabama.
The Golden Eagles play a Privateer team that is 0-3 after being swept at South Alabama last weekend.
Southern Miss leads the overall series with UNO, 51-48, and have captured the last 12 contests between the two clubs.
Following the UNO contest, the Golden Eagles play the next eight games away from home, including three at Bayfront Stadium in Pensacola, Fla., this weekend as part of the COX Diamond Classic. Southern Miss takes on North Florida Friday at 7 p.m., and complete play in the event on Saturday with an 11 a.m., tilt with Saint Louis and a 7 p.m., game against Nicholls State. The Friday night game will be telecast on Cox Sports Television.
