
Women's Tennis Blanks Southern 7-0

BATON ROUGE, La. - The Southern Miss women's tennis team blanked Southern University 7-0 on Saturday in non-conference tennis action, improving to 5-2 on the young season.
"The girls played a tough match," head coach Dominic Modise said. "They did well. They are getting better with every match."
The Golden Eagles quick took control of the match, winning the doubles point. Lisa Schneider and Claudia Castella defeated Morgan Taylor and Kendall Bunch at No. 2, 6-2. Kathrin Waidner and Elena Roca followed shortly with a win at No. 3 against Nicki Neal and Comora Davis, 6-3. Carolin Drescher and Alex Kitchen battled to a 5-5 tie at No. 1 against Darnesha and Gabrielle Moore on court 1 before the match was halted.
The Golden Eagles carried their momentum into singles play as Kitchen downed Davis, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 5. Roca followed with a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 6 against Neal and Drescher clinched the match with a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 2 over Syori.
Rounding out the remaining play, Karina Gurgenyan defeated Taylor 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 at No. 4. Castella dropped her first set 6-4 to Gabrielle Moore, but rounded to take the final two sets, 6-2. 7-5 at No. 3. Schneider concluded play for the Golden Eagles, capturing a three-set win against Darnesha Moore at No. 1, 6-7, 7-5, 10-6.
Southern Miss is back on the courts against Southeastern Louisiana on Feb. 20 at 4 p.m.
