
Soccer Continues League Play with Charlotte / LA Tech

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss women's soccer team has another home / away split weekend of Conference USA matches, as the Golden Eagles host Charlotte at 4:00 p.m. on Friday at the Southern Miss Soccer Complex face before heading to Ruston, La. to take on Louisiana Tech on Sunday at 5:00 p.m.
The Golden Eagles (2-6-3, 0-2 C-USA) are looking to earn their first points in conference play after losing both opening games, against Middle Tennessee Friday, Sept. 25 and Old Dominion on Sunday, Sept. 27, 1-0.
Goalkeeper Brittany Taylor, assisted by defenders Ola Akinniyi, Ashton Stennis, Kay Kay Hypolite and Adriana Garcia, will continue keeping opponents' results low. The crew is averaging just over one goal against per game.
Taylor, a junior, has 58 saves this season and currently ranks second all-time in career saves (251) for Southern Miss.
Charlotte leads Southern Miss in the all-time series 7-0-1. The most recent meeting was last fall, when the 49ers picked up a 2-1 home victory.
Southern Miss is 1-2-2 all-time against Louisiana Tech. The two teams played to a scoreless draw last season at the Southern Miss Soccer Complex. In the game, Taylor set the school record with 21 saves.
Friday's game in Hattiesburg will celebrate Faculty / Staff Appreciation Day. The first 100 faculty and staff members in attendance will receive a Southern Miss T-shirt with valid ID.
Scouting the Opposition:
Charlotte: Charlotte won their conference opener against UAB on Friday, Sept. 25 (W, 3-2). The victory brought their overall record to 5-5 (1-0 C-USA). The 49ers' leading scorer, sophomore Martha Thomas, currently ranks number one in the nation in goals per game average with 1.10.
Louisiana Tech: Louisiana Tech lost its opening two conference games against Old Dominion (L, 2-1 -- 2OT) on Friday, Sept. 25 and WKU (L, 1-0) on Sunday, Sept. 27. LA Tech will play at UAB on Friday night before hosting the Golden Eagles on Sunday.
