
Women's Tennis Picks Up a Pair of Wins

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss women's tennis team picked up a pair victories Saturday with a 7-0 win over William Carey and Alcorn State.
Southern Miss kicked off the day against William Carey in a 10 a.m. matchup. The Golden Eagles swept the doubles in gaining the first point of the match as Carolin Drescher and Alex Kitchen defeated Audey Leitz (WC), 6-1, at No. 1. Claudia Castella and Lisa Schneider downed Sara Valero Marin (WC), 6-2 at No. 2 and Karina Gurgenyan and Elena Roca blanked Hannah Bradford and Natalie Sanchez on court 3, 6-0
Southern Miss swept the Crusaders in singles' play. Only one match went beyond two sets. Roca blanked Bradford in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 while Kathrin Waidner downed Saunders 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6. Kitchen won at No. 4 with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Kaufmann. Schneider defeated Valero Marin on court 2 with a 6-1, 6-2 victory.
Castella outlasted Sanchez at No. 3 by a score of 7-5, 6-2. Drescher fell in her first set 6-4 to Leitz before rebounding to take the final two sets, 6-2 and 10-3.
The Golden Eagles added another win to improve to 4-0 on the young season with a 7-0 win over Alcorn State in a 2 p.m. match.
The Golden Eagles collected the doubles' point winning at No. 1 and No. 3 with identical scores of 6-1. Drescher and Kitchen knocked off Ivana Boberica and Sioghan Ryan-Bovey while Gurgenyan and Roca defeated Akkaksha Punj and Patricia Normand. Castella and Schneider were leading 5-3 against Aida Kelic and Kate Potapova before the match was halted.
Keeping the momentum heading into singles, Southern Miss won all six matches. Roca won at No. 6 over Punj, 6-1, 6-1 while Kitchen earned a victory at No. 5 in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1 against Potapova. Gurgenyan claimed at 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 4 over Normand and Drescher won at No. 2 against Ryan-Bovey, 6-3, 6-3.
Schneider, playing at No. 1, took three sets to gain a victory over Kelic, 7-5, 1-6, 10-4.
Southern Miss returns to the courts on Feb. 7 against McNeese State at 1 p.m.
