HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss soccer team concludes the nonconference portion of its schedule with a pair of games over the weekend. The Golden Eagles travel to Huntsville, Ala. on Friday, Sept. 19 to square off with Alabama A&M (4:00 p.m.) before returning to Hattiesburg for a game with Southern on Sunday, Sept. 21 (1:00 p.m.).
Southern Miss enters the weekend with a 3-4-0 overall record. The Golden Eagles are 3-1-0 at home and will look for their first road victory on Friday against the Lady Bulldogs. Alabama A&M is 0-6-0 on the season, but has played just one game at home. Southern is 0-7-0 on the year, but will play host to Louisiana College on Thursday night prior to facing the Black and Gold.
Defensively, the Golden Eagles have boasted three shutouts, including three consecutive at home. True freshman Shelby Presnell has seen action in three games in a row, making back-to-back starts. In her first start at home, Presnell posted her first collegiate victory with a 1-0 double overtime shutout. She has recorded a team-high 19 saves on the year.
Southern Miss has a 2-0-0 advantage over Alabama A&M. The game will be the third consecutive in the series played in Huntsville, Ala. The Golden Eagles opened the series in 2002 with a 7-1 victory. Five years later, the Black and Gold posted a 5-2 win over the Lady Bulldogs. Southern Miss and Southern have never met on the soccer pitch.
The Golden Eagles are 18-1-0 all-time against current members of the Southwest Athletic Conference (SWAC). Earlier this season, the Black and Gold faced Mississippi Valley State and Jackson State out of the SWAC. Southern Miss defeated the Devilettes, 8-0, in a game shortened due to darkness. The Golden Eagles followed that victory with a 5-0 shutout against the Lady Tigers.
