Women's Basketball Hits the Road Against South Alabama

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss women's basketball team hit the road for the first time this season when they travel to South Alabama on Monday for a 7:05 p.m. tip. The Lady Eagle contest can be heard on WHXB-FM 96.5 or at www.SouthernMiss.com with Josh West, voice of the Lady Eagles, providing the play-by-play action.
About Southern MissThe Lady Eagles are coming off a 98-45 win over William Carey in their season opener. Six players scored in double figures led by Brooke Rhodes and Lashyra Cotton with 18 points each. Kierra Jordan scored 17 points while Ashley Folsom, Voche' Martin and Markia Nix added 11 points apiece. Jordan, Martin and Cotton grabbed six rebounds each.
Southern Miss shot an impressive 68.6 percent from the field including 75.0 percent from behind the arc. Brittanny Dinkins dished out a career-high 11 assists. USM finished with 28 assists and 17 steals.
A Look at South AlabamaSouth Alabama (0-0) officially opens the 2014-15 season against the Lady Eagles. The Jaguars are coming off a 58-26 win over William Carey in an exhibition game. Breanna Hall led USA with 14 points while Marquita Daniels had 13 and Colby Davis added 10. The Jaguars finished the game shooting 47.8 percent from the field while holding William Carey to 19.1. South Alabama pulled down 58 rebounds.
Hall is the top returnee from last season, averaging 10.0 points while Rachel Cumbo was next at 8.9 points. Cumbo is also the top returning rebounder at 4.3 rebounds per game.

This is the 28th meeting between the two teams in a series that begin in 1975-76 season. Southern Miss leads the overall series 16-11. Over the last six meetings, the series is tied at 3-3.
Southern Miss will have a quick turn around when the Lady Eagles return home to host Mississippi Valley on Wednesday at 6 p.m. The game has been designated as Faculty and Staff Appreciation Night. Faculty and staff can buy one and get one ticket free. They will also be recognized during the game. Players will be available for poster signing following the game.
