
Soccer Set for Final Home Weekend of Season

Sunday's game against Western Kentucky will be the "Kick or Treat" game. Halloween candy for all Kick or Treaters in attendance. Fans are encouraged to wear their best Halloween costumes. Prizes will be awarded to the best costumes at the game. In addition, Sunday's game will also serve as Blake Nettles Day. It is the annual event recognizing the life of Blake Nettles and his contributions to the Hattiesburg soccer community.
Southern Miss enters the weekend with a 5-8-3 overall record and a 0-4-3 mark in Conference USA play. The Golden Eagles are coming off of a 0-0 double overtime tie with Louisiana Tech. Although the game against LA Tech was Senior Day, sophomore Brittany Taylor stole the show recording a school-record 21 saves en route to her third shutout of the season. For her efforts, Taylor earned her first ever C-USA Defensive Player of the Week Award.
The previous school record for saves was 16 set on two different occasions. Most recently, Hannah Vanderboegh notched 16 stops at Colorado College on Oct. 17, 2010. Taylor fell just one stop shy of tying the Conference USA record for saves.
Defensively, the Golden Eagles recorded 23 saves on the day, led by Taylor's 21 stops. The team also had a pair of team saves to help preserve the shutout. The Golden Eagles recorded six stops in the first half and followed that half with eight saves in the second stanza. In the first overtime period, Taylor and the defense stopped eight shots on goal and posted a save in the second overtime to complete the shutout.
Marshall holds a 7-2-1 record in the all-time series between the two schools. The Golden Eagles have never won against the Herd away from Hattiesburg (0-4-0), but are 2-3-1 at the Southern Miss Soccer Complex. Last season, the two teams played to a scoreless draw in the Hub city.
The meeting between Southern Miss and Western Kentucky will be the first time in program history the two teams have met on the soccer pitch. WKU joined Conference USA this season after a long tenure in the Sun Belt.
Scouting the Opposition:
Marshall: Marshall enters the weekend with a 6-5-4 overall record, including a 3-2-2 mark in league play. The Herd had its five-game unbeaten streak snapped by Middle Tennessee in its home finale on Sunday, 1-0, at Veterans Memorial Soccer Complex. The Thundering Herd's unbeaten streak was the longest since Marshall opened the 2009 season with a program-record seven consecutive wins. The Herd had not lost since dropping its C-USA opener against Western Kentucky, 1-0 (Sept. 27).
Western Kentucky: WKU rides a three-game Conference USA winning streak into a pair of league road games this weekend as the Lady Toppers jockey for tournament position at LA Tech and Southern Miss. The Lady Toppers will visit the Lady Techsters Friday at 7:00 p.m. before battling the Golden Eagles Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Coming off a pair of victories over Middle Tennessee and UAB last weekend, WKU now controls its postseason fate with 12 points in the league standings. The Lady Toppers are currently sixth in the Conference USA race but sit just four points outside first-place North Texas (16).
