HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss junior right-handed pitcher Andrew Pierce was awarded the Conference USA Pitcher of the Week on Monday after throwing a three-hit shutout over East Carolina last Friday night in a 1-0 victory.
The Stringer, Miss., product threw his second complete game of the year and his first shutout over the No. 30 ranked Pirates in the series opener. He fanned the first three batters he faced and five of the first eight he faced, ending the game with 11. The performance marked his fifth double-digit strikeout performance of the 2012 campaign.
Only one runner reached second base for the Pirates in the contest, with that coming in the second inning. Pierce retired the last five batters he faced to end the contest. It was the fourth time this season in a start that he did not allow a run and he threw at least seven frames in each of those starts.
Pierce improved his record to 7-3 on the season and has now fanned 90 and walked just 14 over 86 1/3 innings. This is his second C-USA Pitcher of the Week honor this season.
Rice freshman SS Ford Stainback, who batted .643 in a series win over UAB, was honored as the Hitter of the Week.
