HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss baseball team finishes the non-conference portion of its 2012 season this week when they travel to Pearl, Miss., to face Ole Miss, Tuesday, before returning home on Wednesday to take on Grambling State.
The Golden Eagles (25-18) play the Rebels (28-16) in a makeup game beginning at 6:30 p.m., at Trustmark Park. Fans with tickets from the rainout earlier this season can exchange them at the stadium box office to receive a ticket for this game.
Southern Miss then returns home on Wednesday to play a Tiger squad that has posted a 20-21 record. Game time at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field is 6 p.m.
After winning two of three games at Marshall over the weekend, the Golden Eagles have won five of their last seven games and have gotten solid pitching over that stretch. The team has allowed just a 1.62 earned run average over that time while opponents are hitting just .207 against the staff over this stretch.
Golden Eagle freshman closer Bradley Roney continues to pitch well after garnering a pair of saves last weekend at Marshall. Roney, the righthander from Wetumpka, Ala., has notched saves in each of his last four appearances and has posted an ERA of 0.75 over his last 12 innings spanning seven outings.
Redshirt freshman Austin Roussel continues to hit well for the Eagles. The Hester, La., native collected a game-winning hit last Friday, a two-run single in the eighth, and is now hitting .348 for the year.
Fellow Freshman Mason Robbins has posted a .346 batting mark for the Golden Eagles and he has been followed by Ashley Graeter at .333 and Dillon Day at .302.
The Golden Eagles were undecided about a starting pitcher on Monday, while the Rebels will counter with righthander Josh Laxer who has posted a 3-0 record with a 5.51 ERA.
Following the midweek action, Southern Miss heads to New Orleans for a three-game set with Tulane. Game times for the series are 6:30 p.m., on Friday, 2 p.m, on Saturday and 1 p.m, Sunday.
