Golden Eagle Women's Tennis Falls to UALR, 4-3

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss women's tennis team dropped a close match to UALR, 4-3, on Monday afternoon at the USM Tennis Courts and fell to 1-2 on the season.UALR's Michaela McShane battled back from a set down at No. 4 singles against Southern Miss' Mackenzie Oskin to win, 3-6, 7-6 (2), 6-2, to clinch the match for the Trojans.
UALR (5-4) won the doubles' point after winning two of the three matches. Oskin teamed with Moorea Williams in winning at No. 3 doubles, 8-1, against Alina Kolegova and Nina Yates. Vikotriya Plyuta and Yana Kakovkina downed Alexus Coats and Frances Askew at No. 1 doubles, 8-4. McShane and Veronique Luksich clinched the points after posting an 8-4 win over Alex Bradley and Kate Lanier.
UALR took a quick 2-0 lead after winning at No. 1 singles. Plyuta was leading 4-2 over Coats when Coats retired due to injury.
Southern Miss got its first point when Lanier knocked off Kokovkina in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 3. The Golden Eagles added another point to even the score at 2-2 when Bradley outlasted Kolegova at No. 6, 7-5, 6-2.
UALR went up 3-2 with a win at No. 5 when Yates defeated Williams, 7-6 (3), 6-2. Senior Elja van Berlo knotted the match at 3-3 after posting a 7-6 (2), 6-2 win over Luksich.
Southern Miss will be back in action on Saturday at 12 p.m., when the Golden Eagles host Southeastern Louisiana.
