Women's Tennis Team Drops Season-Opener at Auburn

AUBURN, Ala. - The Southern Miss women's tennis team officially opened the 2012 season, dropping its opening match to Auburn, 7-0, on Sunday at the Yarbrough Tennis Center.Auburn took the 1-0 lead after posting wins in all three doubles. Elja van Berlo and Alexus Coats dropped their match to Jacqueline Kasler and Jen Pfeifler,8-2. Kate Lanier and Alex Bradley lost to Emily Flickinger and Plamena Kurteva, 8-3. Rounding out the doubles', Mackenzie Oskin and Frances Askew lost to Taylor Cohen and Taylor Schreimann, 8-2.
Auburn opened up a 2-0 lead when Flickinger defeated van Berlo, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 1. Kasler followed with a 6-1, 6-1, win over Moorea Williams at No. 4. Cohen then clinched the match with a 6-0, 6-0, win at No. 3 over Askew.
Kurteva defeated Oskin, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 3 while Pfeifler knocked off Lanier, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 2. Schreimann downed Bradley, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 6.
Southern Miss will host Jacksonville State on Saturday, Feb. 4 at 12 p.m. at the USM Tennis Courts.
