HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss women's soccer team returns home after spending much of the past month on the road when they host Conference USA foes Colorado College and UTEP this weekend at the Southern Miss Soccer Complex.
The Golden Eagles will take on the Tigers from Colorado Springs on Friday with a 4 p.m. kickoff and the Miners from El Paso on Sunday with a 1 p.m. kickoff.
For the Friday matchup, the Southern Miss athletic department will partner with the Hattiesburg Zoo for "Zoo Day," and welcome numerous four-legged friends from the animal kingdom out to the complex.
Sunday's matchup will be the "Pink Out" game with the Golden Eagles wearing special edition pink jerseys in an effort to raise breast cancer awareness. Select jerseys will be auctioned off and limited edition pink t-shirts will be available for purchase with proceeds going to the Waiting for a Cure Foundation.
Southern Miss (3-5-3, 0-1-1 C-USA) will have the task of taking down a Tigers squad that has remained perfect in conference play through two games. Colorado College (4-4-2, 2-0-0 C-USA) hosted Marshall and East Carolina last weekend and will make their first conference trip out of the Centennial State on Friday.
They have been led by Kaeli Vandersluis with eight points (three goals, two assists) while Brittney Lyman has added three goals of her own. Keeper Hanna Berglund has posted four shutouts this season and has minded the nets every minute of 2011. The Tigers will put their three-game winning streak on the line when they come to Hattiesburg on Friday.
For UTEP, reigning C-USA co-Offensive Player of the Week Tess Hall led the Miners to a perfect conference start last weekend. The Miners (8-2-1, 2-0-0 C-USA) are unbeaten in their last six matches with their lone tie coming at Texas-San Antonio in a 3-3 affair. An explosive UTEP offense will meet a stingy Southern Miss defense on Sunday.
Southern Miss continues to be led by junior striker Jordan Wagner and versatile senior Elisha Tarbell. Tarbell, who has played on all three levels for the Golden Eagles this season, recorded her second goal of the season on Sunday at SMU while Wagner leads the team in shots with 33 (21 on goal).
Admission is free to all home Southern Miss matches.
