Lady Eagle Tennis Team Has Tough Opening Weekend

NATCHITOCHES, La. - The Southern Miss women's tennis had a tough opening weekend at the Natchitoches Women's Care Lady Demon Classic managing only to win one match.
In the flight one singles, Elja van Berlo lost in three sets to Briggitt Marcovich of Louisiana-Lafayette, 6-4, 3-6, 10-7 while Kate Lanier dropped her match to Medy Blankvoorf of UL-Monroe, 6-2, 6-1. Van Berlo bounced back to win in the backdraw, 6-3, 6-4 over Carolina Salas of Lamar. Lanier lost to Audrey Wooland of Louisiana-Lafayette, 6-3, 6-1, and Carolina Salas of Lamar.
In the flight two singles, Mackenzie Oskin lost in straight sets to Natalia Maygoitia of Lamar, 6-4, 6-0, then fell to Erin Wilbert of Louisiana-Lafayette in three sets, 3-6, 6-1, 10-6. Oskin concluded play with a 6-0, 6-1 loss to Milou Isreal of Louisiana-Lafayette.
Alex Brady dropped her opening match in flight three singles with a 6-3, 6-2 loss to Sandra Ahiqvist of Louisiana-Lafayette. She then lost to Tatiana Larina of Northwestern State, 6-4, 6-0, before losing to Linda Gamo of Northwestern State, 6-2,6 -4.
In flight four singles, Frances Askew lost to Chantal Najero of Lamar, 7-6, 6-1, and Dana Sardak of Northwestern State in three sets, 6-3, 5-7, 10-4.
In doubles, Oskin and Lanier lost to Linda Gamo and Olga Bazhanova of Northwestern State, 8-1, then lost to Salas and Natalia Mayagoitia of Lamar, 8-2. Larina and Andrea Nedorostova of Northwestern State topped Bradley and Askew, 8-2. The dou then lost to Vivian Polak and Isabelle Rocher of UL-Monroe, 8-6.
Southern Miss returns to the courts on Oct. 7-9 at the Louisiana-Lafayette Fall Invitational.
