Volleyball Cruises Past Southeastern Louisiana, 3-0

HOUSTON, Texas - Behind 10 kills on .625 hitting by senior middle blocker Lauren Sears, Southern Miss volleyball team (6-6) swept Southeastern Louisiana (25-17, 25-12, 25-15) Saturday morning at Sharp Gym in the Husky Classic.
In addition to Sears' numbers, senior middle blocker Sarah Jane (SJ) Bowden posted nine kills, junior outside hitter Halie Ecker notched eight kills on .500 hitting. As a team, Southern Miss hit .379, including .5469 in the first set.
Senior setter Kelsea Seymour dished out 35 assists and added five kills on nine attacks while senior libero Lisa Knecht led the Eagle defense with 12 digs.
Southern Miss recorded 6.0 team blocks to SLU's 2.0. Sears notched five stuffs.
The first set started off close through the first 23 points of the match as the Golden Eagles got back-to-back kills from Ecker for the 14-11 lead. SLU got a point back before USM recorded three straight points for a 17-12 lead. Southern Miss eventually pushed the lead to seven, holding on for the 25-17 win.
Southern Miss scored 12 of the first 14 points as the Eagles recorded five kills and an ace during a 9-0 run. The Lions couldn't get their offense on track as the Golden Eagles put down 14 kills and committed only one error to hit .406 in taking the second set, 25-12.
Southern Miss started out the third set on fire, going up 5-0. The Eagles pushed the lead to 10-2 before Lions called a timeout. Southeastern managed to get the score to 13-5, but that was as close as the Lions would get. After the Lions called their second timeout, the Golden Eagles finished the set with an 8-5 run for the 25-15 win.
Southern Miss plays its 10th and 11th consecutive matches on the road when the Golden Eagles travel to Houston to open Conference USA play Houston on Friday at 7 p.m. and play Rice on Sunday at 1 p.m.
