Both teams had their chances but neither was unable to find net as the Golden Eagles got the draw for the first time against their in-state rival.
"I liked our intensity today," said coach Scott Ebke. "We had our chances to finish and unfortunately had a few bounces not go our way. But I'm proud of the way the team played today and how they battled for 110 minutes."
The Black and Gold put five shots on frame but junior Jordan Wagner's may have come closest to catching net.
In the 79th minute, Wagner took a service onto the left side, dribbled to the corner of the 18-yard box and was able to get her defender to step too far, leaving a clear path to goal. Wagner ripped a shot into the upper right frame of the goal, over the head of keeper Skylar Rosson, but it clanged iron and sailed away.
Southern Miss had another excellent opportunity late in the game with Wagner in a breakaway situation. Rosson come out of her box and was unable to stay in front as Wagner sidestepped her and it looked like the Golden Eagles have found their winner. But, Rosson threw her left leg into the air, tripping Wagner and drawing the red card from the referee with under four minutes remaining.
The Golden Eagles were unable to create any more shot opportunities as the time winded off but earning the draw with a Southeastern Conference opponent for the first time since a victory over the Bulldogs in 2002.
"Obviously we wanted the win, but this was a hard fought match and a tough result for our team to earn," said Ebke. "But we have to put this one behind us and prepare for a tough opponent on the road Friday."
There were also several yellow cards handed out in addition to Rosson's red. Amy Davis and Casey Adkins both earned yellows while MSU's Morganne Grimes and Shannen Jainudeen picked up cautions of their own.
Sophomore Chelsea Cruthirds led the Golden Eagles in shooting with five shots (three on goal) while defenders Caitlin Leumas and Davis played every minute along the backline.
Senior goalie Hannah Vanderboegh also maintained the goal the entire match, coming up with 11 saves and numerous big stops in quick reaction situations. The Bulldogs took 27 shots in all.
Next up for Southern Miss is a trip to Natchitoches, La., on Friday to take on Northwestern State. Kickoff for that match is set for 7 p.m.
