HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss junior right-hander Josh Thomason earned Conference USA Pitcher of the Week honors after a brilliant relief performance at South Alabama in an announcement by the league office on Monday. His accolade allowed him to become the third Golden Eagle pitcher to be honored this season and the second in as many weeks.
Thomason came out of the bullpen versus the Jaguars, May 4, to throw the final seven innings of a 7-4 victory for Southern Miss. In fact, he helped the Golden Eagles rally from a 4-0 deficit by retiring 20 of 22 batters he faced down the stretch, including the final 16 USA hitters.
Thomason, of Oxford, Miss., allowed just one hit and struck out five with only one walk as it was his longest stint of the season and his strikeout total was his season-high. Thomason is the first reliever to be named C-USA Pitcher of the Week this season.
The Golden Eagles have been honored a total of six times this spring as B.A. Vollmuth (March 14), Adam Doleac (March 28) and Marc Bourgeois (April 4) garnered Hitter of the Week awards, while Geoffrey Thomas (March 28) and Jonathan Thompson (May 2).
Southern Miss returns to action this weekend when they travel to play at Houston in a three-game Conference USA set. Friday's opening-game first pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m.
