Koelling, Vollmuth Named Ferriss Trophy Finalists

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss senior outfielder Tyler Koelling and junior infielder B.A. Vollmuth have been named two of three finalists for the 2011 Cellular South FerrissTrophy in an announcement by the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame in Jackson.Koelling, a senior outfielder from Luling, La., leads the team in hitting (.374) and doubles (17) while also holding the distinction of being the only Golden Eagle to play in all 50 games this season. He is one of the toughest hitters in the country to strikeout as he has fanned just eight times, while hitting safely in all but six games. He had the longest hitting streak of any Southern Miss player during the season at 12 games and has posted a team-best five outfield assists.
Vollmuth, from Biloxi, Miss., leads the Golden Eagles with 12 home runs and 47 runs batted in this season. The Golden Spikes Award Watch List member currently is hitting .305 and has added 11 doubles and three triples for the Golden Eagles in 2011. The pre-season All-American also garnered a Conference USA Hitter of the Week accolade (March 14). He has 19 multi-hit contests this season and a team-best 13 multi-RBI games. He ranks No. 7 on the all-time Golden Eagle charts with 40 career home runs.
Jarrod Parks, a senior infielder from Mississippi State, was the other finalist.
The finalists were selected by a panel of 25 voters that includes college coaches, Major League scouts and a media member. The recipient of the 2011 Cellular South Ferriss Trophy will be announced Monday May 23, 2011 at the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame in Jackson, MS. A 11:30 a.m. luncheon buffet will precede the awards program, which will begin at noon. Individual tickets are $35.
Longtime Delta State head baseball coach Boo Ferriss, the namesake of the award, will be in attendance. Ferriss is a former Mississippi State All-American and a member of the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame, Delta State and Boston Red Sox Halls of Fame. The three finalists and their coaches also are expected to attend.
The inaugural Cellular South Ferriss Trophy presentation took place in 2004 and Southern Miss has not had won the award.
